I started welding class this evening and my eyes are irritated . Brand new Jackson Safety Insight ADF hood. I thought possibly light pollution. When I got home, I went into a totally dark room with a bright flashlight to test the hood. As I turn on the flashlight aimed directly into the lens, I can see how bright it is for a very short time. Is this normal? I mean if I was trying to strike an arc stick welding for three hours it can be irritating. Thoughts, suggestions? Do I need a different or better hood? Thanks all!
i don't know that hood but,
my usual problem is not setting the shade dark enough. your eyes tend to compensate for it being to bright but that creates tons of eyestrain. the other is the delay setting which is actually for the delay at the end. make sure it stays on a bit more than you need.
the other thing with new hoods is leave them in the sun in the workshop/garage. some types use the light to recharge and may not work well if power is low.

even though it is "auto darkening" there should be adjustments that work for YOU. You will have to play with those adjustments to suit. Also, some helmets work after a lot of sunlight for recharging as tweake stated and some have a battery. I am not familiar with your helmet, but I do have one without a battery and can sometimes present a challenge until the temp gets warmer in the shop.
You will need to adjust the shade on it per process you are doing . Tig is alot brighter , mig is the least brightest in my opinion and high amperage stick is pretty dang bright.PCR60 wrote:Thank you for the quick replies, I appreciate that.
