Can You Identify This Tool?

I have tried to find a tool like this to buy, I guess its pretty similar to a combination square, but I would like to at least know I have an option. I emailed Starrett and they didn't know and don't make one.

It is used for scribing a line offset from an edge.

They are quite handy at times though you can use odd leg calipers to do the same job mostly - fairly sure mine if I could find it is the very common one from Axminsters.

Sorry Poland308, this is not a version of an depht gauge.
This is a "Streichmass" in english Marking Gauges (for metal)

Could someone please explain why the scale doesn't begin at edge? What am I missing?

I can't speak for that specific tool, but tools I use that are of a similar concept have the witness/reference marks equally recessed for reading the measurement, such as on this cheapy brass empire gauge which is actually extremely handy, and I have been using to getting "accurate" ID and OD rough measurements for at least the past 10 years. Note how the "out" and "in" scribe lines are both offset from the edge to compensate.

Yes you are using a correct name. It’s a pattern makers tool, wood workers use it too. But it works just like a depth gauge.

We use these or sometimes a machinist depth gauge like I mentioned before.

I completely agree with Poland

Functionally, it is 100% a depth gauge, just a depth gauge for surface marking
