But would it Really make all that crap?
I think it would it least puddle?
Just a couple welders and a couple of big hammers and torches.

Because cast iron is full of "junk" it will do that. But I am no expert on cast. I guess that rules out tigging the 309.

Ouch!!
I need a second opinion.
Is there any way to heat and add a filler material to make it stick?

Second opinion is a good thing, my head is not in it today. As far as another method I guess all that's left in gas weld it, but that is not my area of expertise, or silicon bronze. I would still go with the nickel rod myself.

This kind of situation is why oxy torch brazing is such a good option. Heat it up and pour it in, no probs with melting the crud out of the cast.

Bit late on this one - but something like a vice is hopefully malleable cast ( unless it's Chinese ! then it's any ones guess ) & that will oxy / acet braze just fine usually - " normal " brazing rod - plain copper zinc - works just fine - but those with a small addition of nickel are good as well - I prefer the coated ones & have had good success with Soudometal & SIF rods in the past - you could also gas weld it with a cast iron rod or old piston rings as filler - but I prefer the more forgiving nature of braze - seems like people are forgetting just how versatile & good the old ways are ! I've said it before - but Tig is getting like a fetish when often it's not the best or most suitable process.

John,
Have you done anything else with the vise? I lit up on one of my vises and it did the same as yours. Will get a pic when I get a chance.

I honestly haven't done anything with it, was going to talk to a good friend of mine who is a expert at cast brazing.
I'll see what he thinks and go from there.
