Hello everyone, this is my first real post. I'm looking for advice on a job i have coming up, its something ive never done before which is weld inside a finished office building. They are adding an office about 50 ft inside one of the doors, (so welder can stay outside) however, when they opened up a wall to add the door there is cross-bracing in the way, the engineer came up with a solution of cutting it out and welding in new bracing to clear the door.
So i was thinking id just go in there with 7018, however that would cause quite a bit of smoke. i currently do not have a wire feed suitcase. MIG will still cause smoke though. so i was thinking of renting a portable fume extractor. would love to hear suggestions. anyone used a portable fume extractor with stick?
May i clarify that the worry of smoke is not for the fire alarm, but the smell is would leave after and while welding. id be nice if they didn't have to get the carpets cleaned, but maybe that's part of what will have to happen
Thanks in advance
General welding questions that dont fit in TIG, MIG, Stick, or Certification etc.
Last time I did 7018 inside an office building, we had a make-shift fume extractor made up of some shop fans and HVAC ducting that led roughly 50ft to the bay doors at the back of the warehouse. Worked really well and was relatively low cost. Can't remember how many rods I burned through but this was roughly 96" of weld. Already had the fan and we were able to pick up the ducting cheaper than renting a fume extractor. Overall cost was around $40 I think. This was inside where they had a bunch of 316L piercing jewelry stored and there were no reported issues.

They use the small miller portable ones with the flexible arm on site as needed. But it might be more cost effective to just tig it. No smoke no sparks. That’s my go too in office building setups.
I have more questions than answers

Thanks for the reply's, i never thought of the shop vac with the hose, i will probably be doing something like that. I priced out a portable fume extractor and it was cheap! 80 bucks for 7 days however then he said i would have to buy the filter, which is 300 bucks, told him thanks and hung up...
