Welding Tips and Tricks

Hey ya'll,
My boss set aside a machine he bought a few years back when his company started growing and never ended up utilizing it. I've been bugging him about letting me take it for a while now, and where it was being stored is getting turned into offices so he is letting me take her home. I need some help identifying it, it looks like it was painted a long time ago to look like a Miller. All tags were removed as well. I appreciate any feedback and once I get it moved to my shop I'll let ya'll know how she runs.

It’s a miller! I’m not sure what model but no doubt about it. From the 5 pin connection I’d say mid 70’s to mid 80’s.

Maybe there'd be a ID sticker on an inside panel?

I cant find any pictures of anything earlier than a Deltaweld 450, which is a different layout woth gauges on the opposite side of the face. I scratched some of the paint off, then looked for places they missed with the rattle can. The base coat is a cream color.

Even with a different color underneath it still says miller. Might have been sold under another name but Miller.

Hobart is Miller and it’s cream/white.

ITW (Millers parent company) didn't aquire Hobart until 1996.

Maybe on paper but the resemblance is suggestive. Also they outsourced everything over 250 amps for long before they got bought out.

Well I managed to get ahold of someone at Miller and sent them pictures, we will see what comes of it. After all of my googling I'm almost certain it's a Hobart Mega-Flex 650 RVS, reverse image search wasnt working because they were shipped baby puke green.

Its hard to see in the pictures, does the amp guage on the 450 go to 800 like it does on the 650? Judging by the width it looks like I've got myself a 450.

Here's a better pic cf the 450 showing the DC amp gauge scale to 800 amps. Or at least I can zoom in on the the pic prior to uploading and read 800amps clearly. If you PM me your email I will send you the original pic.

Here's a better attempt a gauge resolution:

It sure looks Miller to me. There were Millers painted yellow marketed as Airco.
Is it single phase?

Check for an ID tag on the back of the machine.
It should list the model and serial number. Should also list the primary and secondary amperage and voltage ratings. Will also tell you if it’s a single or three phase powered machine.

The tag was in the front of the machine, there are no tags anywhere else. It is the aforementioned Mega-Flex 450 by Hobart, reading the manual I found online the Mega-TIG function solidifies it.

A quick search tells me that these are 3 phase only powered machines.
