Problem with Nelson Drawn Arc Stud Welder

Hi Everyone. Thanks for your help in advance.

I got a second hand Nelson Arc Lite Plus Stud Welder recently from an auction. I'm keen to use it but I'm not experienced with this type of welder and having a problem. Unfortunately I can't find much about this type of Nelson welder. It's not on the Nelson website, however it seems that Arcon make a similar welder, called the 'Studhorse 1200 DM'.

Basically the studs aren't actually welding to the work piece. I've attached a video for you to see for yourself. According to the manual's suggested settings, I have it set for M8 Studs, 550A and 0.25 Seconds. When the trigger is pressed there is a short 'squeal' and but the arc is not happening. I've messed with the settings and turned it up, at 1000A it still doesn't work however it did arc a few times at 1000A and burn up the stud.

I'm guessing it's a problem with the lift mechanism inside the gun. I looked inside the gun and all seems well. I'm worried it's something with the welder unit itself. I'm considering getting the gun reconditioned but basically I just wonder if any of you guys have experience with these types of welders or gun.

Thanks lads and lassies

Sorry for the poor quality of the video.

Most stud welders I’ve used also require the use of a small ceramic ring. It goes on the stud at the weld. Looks like you might be missing some consumables.

Can you confirm it is connected to 3 phase power at 400V?

Hi. Thanks for the replies. Yes, I have the ceramic ferrules and have been using them. Also, it's definitely connected to a 3 Phase supply.
