Mig Welding Chromoly Chassis

Hello guys and gals, so I am tasked with doing the final weldup of an already tacked together chromoly chassis. I have built several DOM chassis that were mig welded. I realize Chromoly is typically Tig welded and needs preheat if its heavier than 1/8" material.

I have read that it can also be mig welded without issue.
The chromoly is 1-3/4" .083

If I mig weld this chromoly chassis the same as I would weld a DOM chassis.
Will there be any concerns with strength, integrity, cracking etc.?

Thank You in advance.

I think most will say you will be fine on 083-wall, but it all depends on your technique I'd say.

I probably spend half my week welding chromoly tube with those same specs, but never with MIG, only TIG. If you must run MIG on it, I'd just recommend running it as hot as you can get away with. Preheat will also be your friend, and never try to rapid-cool the part.

A spec frame builder I know locally MIG welds everyone of their frames. As does another pal who works for Kendricks Motorsports. And they build almost 600 frames a year.

MIG or TIG, it all comes down to WPS. Do it properly and competently, you’ll be fine.

You need to really watch your starts and stops, no mater the process. Undercut and holes from tailing off too quick will cause failures more easily with chrome.
