Hey guys,

I am in the need to build some landscape platform steps which the frame I want steel. I need 4 steps the are 2000mm wide, 875mm deep and a rise of 140mm.
I am was thinking of using 50x50x3 shs with joists every 450-500mm. Can anyone give me better engineering ideas.

Having one of the steps open like a box would be handy too.

Could you be a little more specific about some of this? I have no idea what 'shs' means. Nor do I understand what 'open like a box' means. If you mean 50 by 50 square tubing making the risers then okay. Sounds like you need five of them four meters long in order to cover the spacing you want. You said nothing about what you want to use for stair treads. Are you going to use some kind of expanded metal?

Maybe a picture of where you want these things to go might help somebody offer a little more info. It's a little above my paygrade for me to offer a better design than you can, when I have no idea what you're trying to do.

Very sorry for the lack of information. ShS is square hollow steel, basically box tube. I was gonna use 50mm x 50mm but unsure weather to use 1.6mm, 2mm, 3mm thick. When asking about the box like lid I wanted one of the steps to allow me access to under the steps. Was thinking of a hinged section I could open.
I was going to use trex composite wood for the treads. The attached pics are the basic layout i was thinking of. The area is 3200mm x 2000mm and 560mm high. Hope this helps.ImageImage

Okay well then, I guess you need a bunch of triangles 140 by 855 in order to make the inclines for on top of the 50 by 50 joists that you're going to use as the stair risers. I'm assuming you're going to leave them one straight piece and simply build each stair step on top of them. You didn't say where you are located but I suspect from the metric Dimensions that you're in Europe? Possibly Down Under from looking at your license plate across the street? That doesn't look European. I only ask because in Europe I don't think pressure treated lumber is available in order to make the triangular inclines. Those would have to be torrefied wood or some metal. If it's metal, that makes attaching the Trex a bit of a challenge.

What were your initial ideas about how to attach the Trex flooring to the steel framework? Everything else seems rather straightforward to me. Use some posts into either concrete or polyurethane and build on top of that. But the construction of the steps themselves seems like it might be a lot of work.

You might even find a prefab steel staircase to be a more suitable alternative.

Trex as a tread material must be supported every 300mm else it will sag badly. The square tubing need only be 2mm in a vertical application. Horizontally, I’d use 3.2mm as a minimum.

You could use some angle iron for a “lid” to cover with Trex as well as the frame to attach your Trex. I’d be curious on yuor plan to connect the Trex though...?
