Went to the store this morning before work and picked up a bag of Black Beauty Medium blasting sand. Stuck it in the cabinet and this stuff is terrible. I'm sure it's got a purpose if you had a bigger machine or whatever, but in my cabinet, it sends too few chunks and they're way too big to get coverage.

My old sand was in the thing for 20 years, not that it's used that much. But It's really fine, more like something that goes in an hourglass. Fact is, it worked ok, but I figured new sand would work better. Might have been wrong there.

I had no idea what to buy and they didn't have any open that I could see what it was. I probably would have gone with something finer had I seen this. I think she said they have fine and extra fine, no idea what grades that means in grit size. This stuff I have makes me think of 50 grit or larger. Maybe 36.

After it’s used for a while it will get finer. As you use it the pieces crack and split. Leaving sharp edges that blast even better. I’ve taken to buying the cheap sand in a tube that’s supposed to be thrown in a truck bed for weight. Then I pour it through some old window screen. Gets rid of the big chunks and leaves good fine sand.
I have more questions than answers

I took the new stuff out of the blast cabinet today and went back to the old glass beads or whatever it was. It might be really fine but it certainly did a better job than the coarse sand. (Medium).

I might have some time this week to go get replacement media at a place in a nearby town that sells glass bead. For now I'm just using what was in it before.
