Hi there,
Welcome to welding. First tip: soak up as much info as possible. Off anyone you can.
Tip 2: Use the hell out of this site. Jody is a total machine when it comes to welding. He can do things that will make your head explode.
Also, check out Jodies latest review of the Hobart welder. In latest and greatest on the main menu. Better to get a welder that you "grow" into.
Mick.

You don't say where you are located but if there is a Community College near you consider taking a welding course from them. Some have "ConEd" (continuing education) courses at night. For a modest price you will get a chance to play with a lot of equipment as well as some instruction. As far as web resources, spend some time at:
http://www.millerwelds.com/resources/
http://www.esabna.com/us/en/education/e ... ersity.cfm
http://www.aws.org/w/a/
Discussion boards are great, once you know enough to separate the truth from the slag
Here are a couple more to look at:

As for on-line videos... Jody's are generally quite excellent. However, if you surf around youtube you will find a lot of ABSOLUTE CRAP.
