Ball joints welding, which technique is best?

Hello. I am looking to make custom ball joints with long necks to replace the ones on my mill and a couple other projects. What would be the best welder and technique to weld a hard or some where in the grade 6 class bolt steel rod to a bearing and getting it straight as an arrow and still have a decent weld and the bearing smooth all the way up to the rod weld and no snagging?
I have though about drilling a hole in the bearing and threading it for a threaded rod then a light tig weld.
Most ball joints are cast so any useful suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank You.
