Anyone made/fabricated their significant other a birthday gift? If so was it artistic or functional? And what impresses the ladies most?

Are you serious - unless things work different the other side of the pond giving a hand made / fabricated birthday gift will not impress whatsoever & is going to hurt like hell when she hits you with it ! I reckon forgetting a birthday is less dangerous !!

I guess things are different, then.

My wife loves when I make something for her with my own two hands.

Nothing pleases my wife like me working to please her.

If you've been "struck" with a gift you made with your skills, you should reconsider your relationship.

If you can fabricate a 'Ferrari' then I'm quite sure that you won't hurt her feelings.

LOL I'm not talking about fabricating her a fancy new Pot(although my wife likes to cook and she might actually like that) or a shelf out of sheet metal for laundry room, coat hook or ashtray.

and yes i did forgo my wife's birthday this year, as she is impossible to buy for and when asked repeatedly throughout the year says "I dunno, no one ever gets me anything"

When i get time, ill ad a link to the fb page im on, the guys and gals are always making stuff. like roses, love hearts and such. Fairly sure that some things got hit after them but not in a bad way.

I'd have to say that the majority of women out there would rather get something homemade from their significant other. It shows that you are thinking about them and you care enough to take time out of your busy day for them. I've made plenty of stuff for the many ladies I've gone out with, some really liked it, a few didn't. The one's who didn't, I just gave them up, it probably wouldn't have worked out anyway.

But just in case, it never hurts to have a really nice store bought back-up gift for them near at hand!

i made my daughter some "genuine african art" in the form of tribal masks out of sheet metal and she was quite taken with it. several visitors to her apt offered to purchase it right off her wall but she declined. i would post some pictures but you gotta be some kind of internet genius to compress the pictures so the'll be acceptable to this forum.

My problem is I'm more inventive than creative. I can usually come up with some crazily complex idea to perform a simple task, or and very simple idea for a complex task. I've been hit with some "inspiration" at times and lucked out and made some thing artistic but not when I really try.

It doesn't need to be anything overly complicated, at least in my experience. Simple stuff like a picture frame with a picture of the two of you, if she's into gardening a plant stand or hanger will work good. Jewelry boxes always work well, too. It helps if the thing you make is unique or ties into something you both did. You have to pick up clues as to what she wants.....I know, I know, it's not that easy, but it does work!

Since I'm divorced twice, I'll put up a list of homemade gifts that may not work that well as gifts....

1) Homemade laundry detergent
2) A homemade floor scrubber
3) A homemade toilet brush
4) A five gallon jug of homemade perfume
5) Homemade deodorant "just for her"

I am sure those gifts were pretty, but no offense when i say i get the theme of all your gifts are your dirty/smell/a slob.

so far i am getting an idea for a hanging pot holder/rack, even though i don't have a a kitchen island to hang it over I can always say, "its for our future kitchen"
