How many cut-n-welds can you do?

Is there any limit to the amount of times I could cut and re-weld a piece of steel before anything bad happens? Will it become brittle, weak, soft? I am thinking weldable steel here.

I have never needed to actually do this because, very quickly, one would think "Why don't I just weld on a bolt-up spot and be done with it?" But I keep thinking about it.

Depends on how thick the steel is, the type of steel, and how big a piece you are cutting/rewelding. Eventually the heating and cooling is going to warp the steel. How much/how quickly this happens depends on all the above factors.

Welding on an eye bolt for rigging, a dog for aligning the pipe, etc.. is all very common.
