It takes talent to run a bead in these conditions.

That's pretty cool. Is that some sort of a mig gun? And are the bubbles from shield gas or just from boiling?
I have more questions than answers

If i was still single that would be a cool job to try, but I think it requires a lot of travel... you work wherever they need you, probably a lot of off shore rig work. Seems like a nice and peaceful job. don't have to deal with the typical shop noise, grinders, cutoff saws, or your least favorite coworker's way-too-loud radio playing the same 5 crap songs all day long... Just peace and quiet, though that sound of welding stick underwater is kinda creepy, would make a good horror movie background effect.

They say the pay is good, but if you research it, it's really not very good at all, especially considering the risks. Probably make more money as a roughneck (I did that a long time ago on a small land rig, don't remember how much I made but I do remember taking my friends out to dinner every payday ha.)
can't believe it took me this many years to buy a diamond wheel for my bench grinder... what a difference

there's gotta be some underwater welders on this forum, would be cool to hear their thoughts on the job.

Guess there would be no problem with the edges of the bead wetting in. But seriously, it's just simple stick welding, with waterproof electrode coatings, I believe that the diver calls to the surface to have the welding current turned on. Or used to do.

I'd guess that out of position welding would be less a challenge. Touching something before it cools enough, not an issue. How do I keep my 7018 dry?

2 observations-the post weld cool down seemed kinda fast. Was that Low hydrogen straight from the rod oven or plain Farm code 2002?

6013 dipped in hot wax will work at a push so long as it's non critical such as just trying to attach anode straps etc - amps need to be nearly double though from my limited experience - worst thing is not loosing tools - where I've been the bottom is so soft you'll never find anything you drop !good news is you never get grindings or hot slag in the eye !but seriously - I hand it to guys who do this for a living at depth - I only do odd jobs under boats too heavy to lift out & it's a PITA - the simplest job takes 10times as long & if something can go wrong it will !
