Magnetic welding clamp

I was hoping to see a magnetic welding clamp used and see how you like the grounding from it, I know that you always talk about how important a good ground is. I think it could be nice for welding tabs onto pipes instead of having to wrap braided wire around the pipe for ground.

Something like this maybe.

Thanks,

New here, but this is one of the few useful purchases I have made from Harbor Freight:

http://www.harborfreight.com/magnetic-g ... 30754.html

Pain to get off of flat surfaces, but comes off round ones easy as pie. Think about putting an 1"x1/8 flat bar on it as a handle.

One of the pluses is that it has an exposed brass bolt to attach my regular clamp to, so I don't have to hardwire a grounding cable to it.

I got one of those, and yeah, hard to get of plate and sheet stuff.
But the grinding and drilling particles, man what a mess :!:
these on off one are a great improvement.

Does anyone know if these ground through a painted surface? eg pipe

No they won't. It'll stick but it won't conduct. Best case scenario you get no arc. Worst case, it arcs through the paint.

Thanks for the welcome.

I use a small wire brush over a trash bucket and quickly sweep it over the magnetic edges/surface to get the shavings and whatnot off. Seems to work pretty well, but does take a few minutes to work through half a dozen magnets.

I haven't had much luck with them. They get hot and the magnet comes out on the ones i have used. Granted i have only tried the cheap ones but the high dollar ones are really high dollar for a ground clamp.

Darn you all. Now I want one of those. I have seen the magnetic grounds at Tractor Supply and thought about how many times I could use one and then you go and post one with on and off like that and now I want one.

Now, if only they'd make one that sticks to stainless...

I'll keep with the strap wrapped around pipe. The magnets are good for flat surfaces if they have an on/off so they don't get full of grit. I don't like them because they seem to always leave scratches/mal marks and that is unacceptable.

True I think I will stay away from them in my applications too because if they get hot they are not grounding good.

Have you ever looked into a pipeline style ground? They are hideous looking abortions but they work. A little bit of silicon bronze on the contact tip makes for a good ground.
