Hi I’m dave from the isle of man uk
I specialise in sheet leadwork, been gas welding for 26 years, but due to work slowing down in winter, and the really stupid prices for acetylene, i'm moving to mig/tig/mma with the hope of getting a full time job

Welcome aboard Dave.

The IOM, eh? Dream destination for me due to the TT. All the best with your switch to Mig/Tig/MMA and the pursuit of that full time job - trust you will learn some good stuff from the wise ones here.

EDIT - I'm completely unfamiliar with sheet lead work. How do you stay safe working with lead all the time? Pardon my ignorance.

Don't eat it lol, basically lead is no where near as bad as some people make it out to be. 15% of houses over here still have lead water mains . It is the white lead ocide that is bad for you.

Ah, I see. The kids had the TV on recently and a show (Horrible Histories?) was banging on about half the citizens of Rome going mad because of lead plumbing.

That's the last time I glean information on health hazards from children's television... ;)

The roman well to do could afford lead lined pots which were used for cooking and pickling. "Lead oxide " production then poisoning then death of the upper crust leadership and intelligencia hence downfall of empire.

There's even some evidence Lead Oxide was used like a spice, to flavor wine, is it's alleged to be both sweet and tart in flavor. A bit like the Kool-Aid both of our political extremes have been drinking, I suppose...

It's what made port wine sweet and what kept it from spoiling.
I have more questions than answers

i have been doing leadwork for 26 years without using gloves and am ok, back is wrecked lol but fine.
my m8 worked with me for 4 years and nearly ended up on dialysis his lead levels were so high, his gums went grey and his teeth were loose, fainting fits and sickness.
the difference was he was always biting at his nails ie half way down, he never had his fingers out of his mouth and never washed his hands.

a guy i know bought a house in france, it had been uninhabited for 10 years, the first time they went there they filled the kettle from the tap without running the tap for a while first :o . the pipes had oxidised inside due to lack of use, it put his wife and daughter in hospital, they were seriously ill.

so like i said dont eat it and your fine lol
