Welding Tips and Tricks

Hello,

I am an antique car restoring enthusiast. I have a Miller MIG & TIG welder; each 220 volt. I am replacing the floor boards that are new 16 gauge steel. MIG has been used to tack and fill several gaps between old, rusty and new steel.
My question is: Can I TIG weld over the MIG welds to fill in remaining gaps? Will TIG take over MIG?

Welcome to the site Bruce. Think I can remember your name, mine's Bruce too.

You can tig over the mig BUT, you have to get rid of ALL of the rust or you're going to have problems. I like using an little gravity feed sand blaster to clean up the hard to get to stuff.

Seconded Bobs answer We regularly use tig to fix defective mig welds, It is essentially the same metal, As Bob said, clean clean clean, Nothing turns to junk quicker than trying to tig dirty metal.
