Hey guys
just wanted to see peoples thoughts about plasma gouging vs arc gouging
we do alot of arc gouging in the shop and came accross plasma gouging. is this a better process then arc gouging?
Metal cutting - oxyfuel cutting, plasma cutting, machining, grinding, and other preparatory work.
I do a lot of both and they both have their pros and cons. The only issue I have with the plasma gouging is the lack of precise control of the depth of the gouge. Once you get used to the plasma arc when gouging, it isn't so bad. I definitely prefer the carbon rod though. I can get surgical with a carbon rod. Not so much with the plasma arc.

Have to agree with Jim. Plasma gouging is difficult to control. Before you know it you have cut through even on low amps. It works but using it on something critical is not advised.
Plus it can be a little hard on consumables. I use worn out tips when gouging.

All you need is compressed air for the plasma cutter. Then 70-90 psi is no problemmr 32 wrote:and i was told argon argon/heli was the best from stainless, but is it possible to get the 70-90 psi the machine needs to be effective?
I don't know who told you that argon argon/helium mix was to be used, but I have been working with plasma cutters for 20 years and have never heard that. I think they got Plasma welding and Plasma cutting confused. Compressed air is to be used if a compressor is available if not then Nitrogen is used.

I have never had an issue with the oxidation. Just knock off the cut edge with a grinder and your good to go. Besides, if oxidation is an issue, then nitrogen would do the trick. No sense in wasting money for the argon/helium.
