Welding Tips and Tricks

Anyone ever use one if these. Mostly would be used for metal art so mostly would be used for bending and welding small pieces together.

That’s what I keep on my work truck. You can trade the tanks at any HVAC or even some plumbing supply houses. You can do anything you would do with a bigger setup. I have the smallest size handle that will support a cutting head. I even have a multi flame/ rose bud. I’ve brazed 3inch brass valves and cut 1x1/2 inch thick plate. Granted the tanks are small but you can do a lot of work with them.

How long do those small tanks last after being filled and how often do you use the torch?

As for those tank sizes with an OA rosebud, theyre probably not big enough if you were to do some serious cutting. Flow rates would necessitate much larger cylinders. But, for hobby shop stuff, or the small piece heating, a rosebud wouldn't be necessary anyway.

You might also consider a smaller torch like the old O/A pros use for detailed heating and welding. And you could of course use Propane in lieu of Acetylene (pardon if thats what the link showed)

You will use 2 acetylene tanks for each oxygen. Approximately, depending on how much your running the cutting head. How long they last also depends on how big of a tip your using.

Most of the time I would use the welding tip it comes with (don't remember the number off hand)

Personal opinion, I find those tiny tanks to be a waste of time.

Except for strictly portable work that requires a lot of carrying but not much flame time.

No offense ment to anyone who likes and uses them.

Went to my local LWS and will last likely be renting tanks soon. Significantly cheaper in the medium and long run. Costs only twice as much to refill a 337 bottle compared to the 20 oxygen tank.

The torch kit on my truck gets carried into almost everywhere it goes. It’s not uncommon to have the whole setup tied to the ladder I’m working off of. Or if I’m really lucky it’s in a lift basket.

I'll be doing solely shop work and won't be doing work on a ladder with it hopefully. I'm sure if I was doing similar to work as you I would buy one but right now I need to save money

Thats the 1st o/a torch setup I ever had. Is (still kave it) a 'Uniweld' set made in Florida <-that dates it! I got bigger bottles but kept the small ones.

Got one from harbor freight and I use that for bending metal and to cut thicker metal -small pieces- and normally if I need a hole.

I bought a Smith torch set and rented full size tanks and have been mostly happy with it so far.

How exactly would you convert this to propane? There are not many choices for kits setup for propane.

Usually it’s just a pressure diferances of the gas. Your tip is essentialy your gas oriface so you may be limited a litttle by the tip size.
