Surely it's cheaper than acetylene?

Because you can't get out energy that wasn't put in.

Acetylene has energy that was put in over millions of years, and can be extracted by adding oxygen.

Water is energy-neutral. You won't get 2 Joules of energy from a kilogram of water without first putting 3 Joules in, and losing energy to heat and other inefficiencies.

If this worked, we'd have perpetual-motion machines and be mining zero-point energy.

Nice idea, but no connection with reality.

Progress is being made with low pressure thorium reactors for energy.
There's one company trying to produce a car that will run for 100 years.
It all sounds like science fiction to most people but I'm an optimist.

If you want to experiment with HHO, there's lots of free information available on the net.
I've seen some of this stuff working and I buy into new ideas and technologies.

My latest ventures are experimenting with low cost insulations using construction poly walls and tiny soap bubbles.
The idea came about from the requirement for inexpensive temporary structures that need to function in extreme weather.

Just cuz a bunch of people believe it, does not make it true. You cannot bypass the laws of physics.

Yes & no - the laws were set down by very clever people in their own time but mostly a long time ago - things change as more is learned - some things that were believed to be " set in stone " may no longer be quite as black & white - ask people 100 years ago if they thought men would fly to the moon - or split the atom - just because it does'nt seem credible now based on knowledge passed down does not mean it will be impossible in the future - obviously some of these " miracle " devises seen on You Tube are just a con / croc of s-it but some may prove to be real even if not currently viable - take the H20 welder that started this thread - it came out & was retailed around I believe £3000 when a full size bottle of oxygen was maybe £8 & acetylene £30 in rough figures so what was the advantage? - it was'nt efficient as it uses brute force electrolysis & so uses around 3times the energy it can release - but it can be carried around easily - contains no gas except a small volume when in use so is safe - the flame itself has many advantages for certain applications - the current price of filling a full size pair of bottles is now around £200 & the paperwork / transport / health & safety issues are getting madder every year - so I think if they can improve the product & get the price down it has a future - that's just plain economy - now if we can believe that Stan Meyer did produce HHO more efficiently with his high frequency / high voltage / low current concept a huge saving in energy can be made - he never claimed over unity as I understand it from this piece of the water car - this is why there is such a negative response when it's mentioned - the HHO was only a small piece in the jigsaw - you may say if it worked why are we not driving around in them today ? but world powers are run by who owns energy - to have free energy would destroy civilization as we know it - I don't know whether I believe in it or not - but the patent office is hard to convince if it was a con trick & there are so many patents for components of that car I'd like to believe the principle is capable of further research - especially when you consider the advances in technology since he began the project in the 70's - water has some strange properties that are still being researched today so maybe we should try & keep a more open mind .

When I say you can not get out energy not put in, I mean it. It's a simple fact and follows common sense with even a basic understanding of physics.

That said, the Sun delivers about 100W/hrs/m^2 to the earth's surface. If this can be harnessed in a meaningful way to split water into H2 and O2 for use in fuel cells or turbines, then we have energy that is "renewable" until we run out of water or sunlight. However, this STILL falls under the 1st law of thermodynamics; You won't get out more than is put in.

Nuclear fission reactors work because the energy was put in the materials by supernovae billions of years ago. Nuclear fusion, in nature, works from gravity, a property of matter we have no control over imparted on matter in the instant of creation/big bang. I have yet to see a single fusion experiment that has produced one Joule of energy more than was required to achieve fusion.

You get out only what was put in; There's no free lunch.
