I'm practicing for D17.1 1G on 8" X 16 gauge 304 ss coupons. I haven't really welded since 2018 so I have forgotten a ton of info. I have never even attempted aerospace welding until last week.
I've been welding these things while trying to follow the instruction on Jody's videos. That is a bit easier said than done because he is a much better welder than I will probably ever be.
The problem that I am having is with penetration. I'm getting full penetration but I'm not liking how I get less penetration as the gaps close up.
8" - 16g 304ss coupons, .045 - 308L filler wire, #12 Furick @ 25cfh, 10 cfh purge, 5 tacks, welded in 2 steps, back stepped and allowed to cool completely between steps.
Do any of you have any advice on how to get uniform penetration?
