Do y'all ever preheat before running a root pass with 7018? I've notice when I do a root pass in 3g and 4g with a preheat it's much easier nice and stable arc. Like on 1/2 inch steel I do 200 degree preheat
Most weld procedures call for a minimum preheat of 50F. Some will spec out higher. If it’s critical work it’s usually a good idea to pre heat enough that you don’t get condensation from the flame. Rule of thumb and such, because that will tell you your metal is above the condensation point of the given area ( local weather and all).
I have more questions than answers
