Looking for any advice on how you guys fit up pipe for a 6010 root I'm having a problem when I try a 1/8 gap its always bigger in different areas and my key hole always opens up on me just any tips to give me something else to try. Land is as close to 1/8 as possible

1/16-1/8 works for me, just tweak the amps to suit.bigger land bigger amps.
just whip like a dominatrix if the keyhole's gettin outa hand

I agree you hit that nail right on the head and also something to try is just doing little circle motions it worked for me and still put in a good rootwheresmejumper wrote:1/16-1/8 works for me, just tweak the amps to suit.bigger land bigger amps.

When my root is not exactly even and keyhole gets out of control I burn a little ahead of my puddle , adding metal to the landing/bevel area then going back to my keyhole , building the metal up will give you better control

Also if your using a fuel powered bevel cutter have someone help you with mastering it or use pipes that have the factory edge and bevel your pipes with a grinder , takes a few minutes but will help for when your in the field with no bevel cutter

Short answer, if I want to weld a 3/32 gap, I tack at 1/8", because it's going to close. For 6" pipe, it's 4 tacks. For 10-12" pipe, it's six. More for bigger. Expect it to close, and try to avoid more than 4-6" between tacks to manage the shrinkage (this is a personal preference, find your own comfort zone).79jasper wrote:Old thread, but still same thing.
What's the best way to get a even land on pipe?
And are there any tricks to keep the gap from opening or closing while tacking?
As for getting an even land, that's either up to your fitter, if you have one, or up to your own level of practice if you fit your own. When I fit for myself (almost always, these days), I rough-grind it with a hard rock, then dress it to my preferred fit with a 60-grit flap-disk.
Just one of many ways to do it...
