These were just a few photos after we cut out the pipe. Were reconfiguring for new boilers but you never know what you will find under the insulation.
Demoed out some hot water boiler pipe it wasn't leaking. But. ???

That looks like repair on live pipe. It's quite common with leaks in non-volitiles to send a maintenance guy out to stick-rod it (with 6010 or 6011 most commonly) and keep at it until it quits leaking.
Yes, ugly as homemade soap, but more efficient than shutting down an entire line for one leak when a band-aid can hold it until the next shut-down.

Except every joint looks like those. And that patch was tight to the floor on a boiler that hadn't been worked on since it was put in. I cut a few joints out to tie back in and there wasn't a bevel they just butted it up tight and capped it.
Edit. And it's a public school that's shut down all summer.

Oh, so the three-finger shop teacher had his class welding it... I see, now.
