5G Hot Pass

This is my first post on the forum, so bear with me...
I have started welding 5G 6 inch ID 40 wall pipe, with a 6010+++++ for the root and 7018 the rest of the way. The root pass is fine for me, but I have trouble with tons of slag in the toes of the hot pass. Any advise on this?
Thanks for your time,

3/32 7018 at 75amps. As long as the coupon is still hot from the root. How thick was your land on the root? And what was your gap?

The land is supposed to be 1/8 and the root opening is supposed to be 3/32. Land goes back and forth and root opening is usually a little wider.

Keep the land at an 8th and make sure the gap is 3/32. I use a /8 6010 at about 75-80 amps, depending on the welder. Then run the hot pass with no weave just a steady pull.

Is a 3/32 for the hot pass what D 1.1 code wants?

the Test I took allowed for use of 3/32 or 1/8. But sch 40 pipe is so thin that it’s much easier to do with 3/32.

Edit
The test I took was for pressure pipe. Isn’t D1.1 for structural steel? There is probably a wps for your test. Any and all allowances and limitations are on that paper.

Yep, it is structural code.

Its not for a job, I'm learning to weld in high school. I have been through open root stick, tig, and mig on plate but pipe is a whole different deal.

Then try the 3/32.
