I was told today that this guy has a friend that works for the pipeline and he tells me that he can weld high pressure line with a thickness of 2-5" with a tig. Why would this need to be done? All the pipeline guys I know use Arc welding on the pipelines so I am just asking to see if this is true and why?

Hey I can use a cuttin torch on a propane tank. Does that make it a good idea? No.
You can tig anything you can arc or mig, along with a bunch of shit you cant, dont matter what the thickness is. If you got enough amps, you can weld it.
It'll just take you about 10 times as long.
Your buddy might be runnin an automated tig welding machine, but noone does anything that thick by hand. Maybe repairs? but I doubt it.
edit-If for some reason this high pressure pipeline was stainless, aluminum, or some wierd ass alloy, it might be tigged regardless of thickness, but they'd probably use mig.
