Are you welding stainless steel to carbon steel?

This test is usually carbon-to-carbon with 309, as it really tests your ability to control the puddle and the undercut. Usually, once you pass this, what they ask you to do is easy by comparison.

A side note-- When TIG welding carbon steel, where I have no access to clean the back side of rust, I'll use 309 for my root pass. It helps eliminate porosity from the rust "boiling" out, especially with a backing bar trapping rust.

I really love stainless stick. Had to post on this one. You welding into a backing or is it open butt?
