Ok I found a really cheap deal on some 3/32 6011 for my lincoln ac225 buzzbox. according to all I've read 3/32 should burn right about 93 amps. On my lincoln 90 seemed like it was trying to burn a hole through the 1/4" thick steel where 75 would hardly strike and stuck like crazy.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

1/8" 6011 burns good 90-100 amps, but my chart lists the range 75-125. Vertical down goes good near the upper part of the range.

3/32" 6011 would be 40-85 amps - so 75 amps should have been good on your machine.

What is your experience level with 6011 in general, and other rods?

If you are inexperienced with stick welding, practice with some 1/8" 7014 or 6013 for an easier experience.

3/32 6011 is best around 60-65mps. that's on 1/8" steel.

Try 65-75.

You must have read the chart for 1/8 rod.

Run some more rods, and let us know.

Dave, my experience stick welding is slim I had a couple of months back in 86 but haven't really touched it since.

Unfortunately those rules only work for certain rods so not very good for a general rule.
Always best to check the charts first :)

Miller has an app for it too: http://www.millerwelds.com/resources/ca ... ulator.php

They also make a little slide card for it (you'll see it on the left of the page).

3/32" 6011 is not a real easy rod to learn with - but the ones I listed: 1/8" 6013 and 7014 are more forgiving.

Hey,
If your 3/32 6011 is sticking at 75amps AC, i think your rods are old and dried out.

Try soaking them in water for a couple minutes.
Just a couple welders and a couple of big hammers and torches.

that could be but they are fairly new to me but there was no seal on the pack. However I suspect I'm bleeding energy somewhere. The ground clamp is coroded and wire going to the clamp is visibly corroded as well. Secondly the stinger is very dirty and at first wouldn't even give me a spark... will replace both and try again. will let you all know what happens.

You're on the problem now bud - bad connections cause lots of problems starting an arc.
Then while welding they heat up at that location.

I almost always use 65 amps DCEP on lincoln E 3/32 6011. @90 amps you can cut with it.
