I ordered 2lbs of .045 308l and 309l off Amazon and the seller put them in the same container without marketing either off them. I have both in 1/16 and tried welding all 4 side by side but I still couldn't quit tell the difference. I tried building up a blob to see if one was more magnetized but they all seemed pretty similar. Bottom one was 1/16 308l then goes 1/16 309l then the 2 unknowns in .045

An inspector told me during a course that a mass spectrometer is a way of determining material composition. Clearly his avalible tools vary somewhat from mine.

If there is no flag / stamp assume it's Chinesium " shiny " metal - this is anything that fell in the melting pot - no need for numbers as it won't comply with any known spec ! even when they do stamp it it's a joke - I had a job come in where the customer supplied 316 tubing & elbows brand new mail order import stuff & it had surface rust on !

Ya no stamping on it, probably because it's so small, But it sounds like there's no old timers trick to figuring it out. I appreciate the help though everyone!

Ya It shouldn't be a problem to return, more of just the hassle and the wait. I have a few lws shops but none that stock .045. This was actually the first time I had bought filler online haha, don't think I'll be doing again after this.

Maybe the LWS can place the order, although if they don't want to stock it they probably want you to but 10lbs.
Ordering online shouldn't be an issue, I would recommend using either Arc-Zone, Cyberweld or IOC. There are others, but I would expect a good experience from these.
