You might find this hard to believe. https://youtu.be/sOpMrVnjYeY starts at 21 minute mark about stainless. Space X had a live YouTube event last night. Their new space ship was unveiled and it is welded together from 301 stainless steel. Elon Musk said during the unveiling that 301 stainless might seem like an odd choice but it takes heat better than carbon fiber or aluminum and requires less shielding during the heat of reentry into Earth’s atmosphere. Also 301 stainless actual becomes stronger when it gets extremely cold in space.
Any young guy’s should be paying attention and maybe be thinking about how to be part of welding these things. Anybody interested in welding should check out the Space X YouTube Channel.

Yes we do, I believe if you understand what's going on with SpaceX then you realize we are seeing history being made, watching their booster return and land is amazing, seeing two return and land together is just incredibleRadishfever wrote: Any young guy’s should be paying attention and maybe be thinking about how to be part of welding these things. Well it seemed a logical choice using stainless - after all if it involves time / space / flying the Doc already knew this when selecting a DeLorean car & he's " the Doc " !!

I agree with both of you. These new technologies are mind bending and unfortunately science and engineering does not get more prime time attention.
If any of you think the latest rockets are cool, then this new starship will really stretch your brain cavity. It's something like 160' long and will be able to re enter and land itself. Then be reused again.
