I need to make some ground clearance so milling off about .750" off the bottom of a NEW oil pan and welding in a plate. The casting is new so there will be no oil to contend with but other report that the pan is an alloy that isn't that clean. What rod will give the best results (ie: no leaks)?

4043, 4943, 5356 all work. 4047 is another good choice for cast repairs

I very seldom weld cast but I think if you were to force me to choose one and only one, it would be 4943. I'm not saying it's the best choice but it would be where I would start.

i would avoid 5356. its temp limit is rather low which you will easily exceed with an oil pan.
tweak it until it breaks

If you don't need to build up any layers then 4047 would be a good fit. It's extra fluidity because of high Silicon content usually matches well with similar high content in alu casting alloys and helps to resist voids and such.

It can be a little more brittle than 4043 though.

4043 and the newer 4943 are good ones too and if you may additionally need to bridge gaps or build up something then 4047 tends to flow too easy to do that.

Bye, Arno.
