Good day,

Would appreciate the help in finding the right filler to weld 4130 to 316.

4130 Tube is 2mm, 316 plug is a 2mm walled cap.

Thanks

Hey,

Welcome to our forum, hope you enjoy the show.

For s/s to steel welding, the filler is usually 309 grade ss. There may be other options but thats a good "go to" rod.

Here is a link i found, hope it doesnt confuse you too much.

PS: to the casual observer, you username looks a little risqué.

I agree with Mick,

Assuming this cap is not a critical component, 309/309L/309LSi. All have good properties for 316, and suitable for high-alloy steel like 4130. 309LSi has better scavenging, and should make a gentler alloy transition across the weld zone. All are easily machined (for stainless) if needed.

If this cap is part of a pressure system, or an attachment for a stress-member, there are more suitable alloys depending on the performace required/service it's used in. I'd have to look that up, though, and they'll cost more, so let us know if it's in some way critical beyond capping the tube.

Mick, thank you for the 309 info.

Steve,

You guessed right, it is part of a pressure member.

For sake of argument I will call it a pressure tank.

The 4130 will go on the outside of a all stainless thin walled, assembled and welded pressure tank, end-cap will protrude from the 4130 tube for 7mm.
The 4130 tube needs to be welded to the front and rear to 316 end-cap and connector..

So please check what would be the best filler.

TiTube, Here's one discussion, based on 309 and hardening/tempering the 4130:

I'm not done digging, though.

TiTubes,

This may interest you... read the Q/A below the picture in particular. 309 may be the best option after all:

I'm stunned how little information is available on this.

Steve,

Thank you, I was lurking the net as well and not much info to be found.

So I guess best would be 309 as I do not heat tread the 4130 tube, no need for that as it is strong enough as bought, Airframe tube.

Will however do sole test runs on my rotary to make sure its all okay.

If you do find extra info just let me know.

tnx
