Pretty interesting really, as I understand it, 4043 depends largely on dilution with the welded base metal for strength, 4943 overcomes that and does not rely on the dilution.RickV wrote:What's special about er4943?

that is exactly right dave! by adding magnesium, they were able to create that. its much stronger then 4043, and will handle hi temps for extended time better then using 5356. shrink crack is great reduced (so they say). several areas i see this will be great for is welding 6061. another is welding 356 and 357 cast alloy. it is heat treatable, and that is important in castings that get heat treated. depending on the price, might be cheaper then the super high price of 4008 and 4009 filler normally used in 356 and 357.

I'm going to have to look into this, for sure! I've had trouble with 4043 on large 6061 structure for the shrink-crack problem, so I've been using 5356, and often require extended heats.nova_70_383 wrote:that is exactly right dave! by adding magnesium, they were able to create that. its much stronger then 4043, and will handle hi temps for extended time better then using 5356. shrink crack is great reduced (so they say). several areas i see this will be great for is welding 6061. another is welding 356 and 357 cast alloy. it is heat treatable, and that is important in castings that get heat treated. depending on the price, might be cheaper then the super high price of 4008 and 4009 filler normally used in 356 and 357.

I'm definitely going to try some - but I probably have 40 lbs of 4043 left to burn up too.Otto Nobedder wrote:I'm going to have to look into this, for sure! Better get my kid practicing tig more often to use it up
He sees better than me, has excellent coordination, and needs to make money this summer anyway

I was considering seeing about getting this to replace my 4043 on this year's spring order. I do not know If my LWS is carrying yet. Hopefully they have it or can get me 20lbs in not sure what there minimum order would be from Hobart. Prolly a pallet or something, hope not.
Now real reason I opened a dead thread.
Anyone have negative things to say about this filler. Only real negative I see is still the color match with anodizing it. I really wish I could replace both 4043 and 5356 with one but looks like this 4943 almost does. So what's your experiences with this stuff. Good or bad

why use standard nozzles after gas lens where invented. Kinda of like starting fires by rubbing sticks together.
Iv'e been out of the loop for a few years on the welding thing but have gotten the bug again. I just picked up 10lbs of 1/8th 4943 I'll let ya know how it works. I overheard my contact at the LWS mention that although Hobart's name is on the package that Alcotec is actually making it, I thought he said ITW had bought into Alcotec, not sure if there is any truth to that or not. ITW has grown into a huge company over the years.
