Those HTP parts you bought are kinda high tech for some more delicate work, not really for general pipe and plate practice.
I use HTP gas lens, and they hold up good.

But for your application, regular collets and stuff work good because the bevels and such help shielding.

Ok Rereading your replies(len,nick & John) Got me thinkin....A couple times i had to dis & reassemble..Tungsten was loose( slid in & out)...I feel a BONEHEAD rookie moment about to rear it's ugly head....I'll be right back. ..let me see if I can.."re-create the crime scene....... (10 mins later) Ok....I think I see what I did......I guess when you put the wrong collets in..BAD THINGS HAPPEN...OMG!!!!!...Just went thru the assembly process just like before, only THIS TIME I was paying attention....Put the wrong collets in the new HTP stuff...Rookies..They just awta be shot sometimes....LMAO...

Good observation, I think that will help keep you from eating collets.
Still doesn't explain why the torch got really hot....
File this experience away, Always check and see if your parts are all the same size.
But you said you were using 1/8 tungsten, How did you have the wrong size?

Here's what I did...Used wrong collet in HTP body....Live an learn....I think the pyrex needs a longer stick out..I was out an 1/8 or so..Read & saw( from AK's link) they come out 6-8 diameters....A LLLOONG way... Now I'll go stand in the corner...LOL

I see by the picture of the HTP stuff with the Pyrex cup that you already have at least one wedge collet. I believe CK makes them in most sizes for most different types of pilots i.e. stubby or 4 series, 2 series, 3 series etc. and they can't twist like the slotted ones.

Now that you got the collet situation figured out it should be a little cooler, but it is an air cooled torch so will still get pretty warm. Can I ask why your using 1/8 tungsten at 120 amps? I would go with 3/32

Having the wrong collets installed..I had already smoked both ends of the 3/32...The next day my little sharpie diamond wheel showed up....SOOO..I hooked it up to my dremel..and sharpened up everything again..Got a tungsten grinder for $8.00..lol (those 300-400 $ ones are nice,but this works for $8.00)...AZ...LEN..had me ROLLIN..I was LMAO.The Boom arm sent me over the edge...Hey LEN..The collets that came with the HTP stuff are pretty beefy...I stuck the collet that came with the Everlast torch in by mistake.....Live & learn I guess....

It's a harbor freight circular saw blade sharpener, I removed the guards, and replacement diamond wheels for them are like three bux. With the coupon and sale it was $30 for a diamond wheel tungsten grinder.
