I've done TIG and MIG on SS in confined spaces without gloves, for hours at a time.
SPF 45 or better is how I did it. You'll want a "non-greasy" formula that absorbs into your skin, or you'll introduce contaminants to the rod and feed them to the weld.
Generally, though, if I know I'll be welding more than four hours (or if the weld is critical and will be x-rayed), I'll wear a thin goat-skin or doe-skin glove.

Well,
That was (6) 1/8 7018 at 130amps. And one 3/16 8018 at 240amps....
Its already solid skin underneath....
Just thought I'd mention it.
I like a heavy duty left hand stick welding glove.
Right hand (stinger hand) is just a thin leather glove.
Any right handed stick weldor, had better show me his pile of burned left handed stick gloves.
That is credentials enough for me.

Just a couple welders and a couple of big hammers and torches.

I don't like to "stick" without gloves, nor "flux-core/dualshield".
The spatter will burn you, regardless.
MIG spatter can burn you, too, depending on position.
I'll TIG without gloves in any postion, and MIG in anything but overhead...
The sunblock isn't just for hands, though. ANY exposed skin, like from a vee-neck shirt, will benefit from UV protection.

Hey,
I'd look like a snake as its shedding in a week..
But seriously,
There isn't much of spatter or sparks flying....
Why would you challenge me???

Ok,
But I could do it without getting any spark burns....
Couldn't make a vid of it though.
I'll just let this guy do it for me....

If I cast the bait out then you took it and ran with it lol
PPE is no joke though - I'm done getting UV burns and scars from weld splatter. Had enough of that trying to MIG overhead on my car once upon a time. Leather gloves, sleeves, jeans, steel toes, handkerchief to cover the top of my head when welding in positions that demand it. Sucks in the summer but what you gonna do. Got pancake filters for my respirator so I can fit it under my hood as well. More for when I'm welding on stainless or metal I can't clean all that well.
