Hi,

I wondering what would be the best filler rod to joint T304SS tubing with T409SS. Tubing are used in
exhaust system, so a lot of heat are involved.

thanks,
Marc

I think, for this application, I'd go with 309 filler. The metals are dissimilar, but in the same family, and 309 performs as well as 308 while allowing more tolerance for the dissimilarity.

For clarity, 309LSi would be a good option in exhaust applications, especially if one or both of the components are previously used and must be dressed hard in preparation.

Steve,

409ss is an OE component for a lot of exhaust on the higher end sports cars and modern muscle cars. I don't know many that are buying 409 to use when 304 has been so successful over the years in performance exhausts, so I'd imagine that all of the 409 he'd be welding to is going to be used hard ;)

For some clarification, I'm doing custom downpipe in 409SS but all the flex used are in 304SS as well as
the vband, so that's explain the 2 differents material.

thanks,
Marc

I would use either ER-410 NiCrMo, ER-309L, or ER-312. In that order, depending on what I had on hand.

I meant to ask after you posted this week's ago, why 409 vs 304?

Gotcha. I've never really looked into it I guess, I'll have to explore that though because 304 ain't cheap lol
