I came across this torch-mounted remote amp controller. It appears to be some type of multi-level switch.

The reason it interested me is that, for out-of position welding, I currently use one of the Miller thumb wheel controllers that I have modified with a contactor switch. This at least allows me to stop welding when it gets too hot. Seems like if I just had a couple more power levels besides ON and OFF, I might be able to do good continuous welds.
Anybody used one of these or know anything about it ?

Never seen that before looks interesting...
I weld stainless, stainless and more stainless...Food Industry, sanitary process piping, vessels, whatever is needed, I like to make stuff.

Not having used it, I would think that 3 levels of power (the 1st is merely an ON) wouldn't be as helpful as the range a thumb controller would provide.
However I would like try one as long as I don't have to pay for it!
Would be more interested in a review from an unbiased TIG technician.

I've not used one of those myself, but my own take on controlling 'power' while welding out of position is simply to use a torch switch and set my up and down slope parameters so that I can pause and cool off if need be without a sudden switch off.
I find that if I set a long-ish downslope, using 2T I can use the switch to effectively pause and cool down as the amps drop, prior to getting back into it and moving on.
Originally a tip I picked up from Jody of course...like virtually everything I do!
Just my 2 cents.

Kym - That's really clever ! I have been welding all this time with a contactor switch right there on my torch, and never figured out that trick ! Sounds like it would work.

OK, I took the plunge... Not cheap at $200, but that includes the shipping.
Bottom line: I have only had this thing a little while, but already I am tending to use it for everything. Works as advertised.
The construction seems a little light, but it is supposed to be made out of glass reinforced nylon, so I think it would be hard to actually break it. We'll see.
You really can change power levels without affecting your arc length. Great !
I think with a little practice, you could do anything with this controller.
