Hi there,
s6 rod has higher silicon content, mainly to act as a scavenger to attract crud in the weld pool. Better for dirtier steels.
(Edited to save on embarrassment at not remembering something from first year of apprenticeship.) The same is true for mig wire. Thats what i believe.

ER70S-2 contains zirconium, titanium, and aluminum in addition to silicon and manganese. Produces x-ray quality welds primarily for root passes on pipe. Metal has to be very clean.
ER70S-6 contains high levels of silicon and manganese for use on slightly contaminated base materials. Better deoxidizer. Has better puddle fluidity and better wetting action.
ER = Electrode or Rod
70 = Tensile strength in ksi
S = Solid (not hollow)
-2 = Chemical composition

Hi there,
When I first used s6 mig wire after using s4, i noticed that it didn't run as smoothly. Don't have s6 tig wire so can't compare to s4. We use s2 on a particular job to help control spatter. s2 mig and tig wire are the same.
