I do a lot of repair work but have never done any titanium before. I've been welding for 20 years, professionally for 12 and I've only had two people ask me to do some titanium. That being said a coworker has a titanium claw hammer that broke a claw off and it needs to be repaired. The smallest quantity of titanium filler I could find is 1lb and it costs over $100. A new hammer only costs $80 and i'd never use up the rest of the rod. So does anyone know of an alternate filler metal that would work with titanium? its just a hammer so if it breaks again its not a big deal. I have some filler for repairing tool steel but I was also thinking maybe 309 or 312 stainless might work. Anyone who's tried something like this or who welds titanium on a regular basis your advise would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, it needs to be titanium.

There is one welding supply by me that will sell it by the individual rod. About $5 I think. Try calling your LWS's and ask if they will do this. Many know that a lot of folks only need a single piece for an occasional repair

A very nice person once gave me some titanium, literally. I'd like to pay it forward. If you can use either 0.045" or 1/16" 6AL-4V filler, I'll send you a few pieces.

I'd like to give a special thanks to Oscar for donating the Ti filler metal for this project. Without him I never would have been able to weld titanium and it was fun. Thanks

Nice clean up after! Sometimes it's. Fun to try to weld something just to see if you can. And that is reason enough to try.
I have more questions than answers
