Hello folks.
Looking for some advise on tig welding a magnesium clutch housing from an old Honda motorbike.
Is it doable? If so what filler rod would be suitable?
Welding set is an EWM Triton 220 ac/dc.
Any help gratefully recieved.
Thank you.

Hi there.

Use the search engine on the main WeldingTipsAndTricks page. They have made a few vids on this subject.

It welds just like aluminum. Everything you would do to weld aluminum, you will do when welding mag.
One thing about the casting though, is it is gonna be dirty. It will have extreme surface contamination maybe even down into the casting and needs to be cleaned very thoroughly. Might not weld very good at first and you may have to weld, grind, weld, grind, and weld some more. Jody just did a vid on welding cast aluminum which will give you a good idea of what it is like to try and weld a dirty casting.
Not sure what alloy casting you have, but either an AZ61A or an AZ92A filler will work.
One thing with mag to watch if you are going to be grinding on it is the dust. It is flammable. Also, burning magnesium is classified as a class "D" fire and cannot be extinguished by a class A, B, or C extinguisher. Safety first. Good Luck ;)
