I split this topic off of the thread it was thread-jacking.

On that note. Hello and Welcome. Welding down hill on pipe can be done while getting good penetration. This involves proper materials, techniques, and practice. Not all welds are equal and if you by chance have any pictures of welds in question then please post them. Then the wisdom and experience of many eyes can give you an accurate answer.

Hi everyone sorri for being so rude in my previous question . Im pactesing for a pipe test .on that note im batteling welding up on the left side and was told i must weld up .so i decided to weld it down and got a good smooth penetration so i showed my friend who is also teaching me and he said it was good bt when i told him i welded it down he said no it wrong .would just like some info on that and would i pass an ex-ray welding down wards
If your pipe weld is going to be xrayed that means there will be a weld procedure specification in place. This will specify what rod to use and which direction to weld. If you deviate from this specification your weld will fail inspection.

The visual inspectors on site on test day will look you out if there doing there job. If they give you a WPS then that's the law. What kind of problems are you having on your bad side?

Old indian trick - When tacking pipes or tubes up for a test I use three tacks about 1/2" long. When placing the tacked coupon in position to weld (6G) I rotate the bottom tack so that the end of it is dead bottom with the remainder of the tack coming up the weak side. That gives you a little advantage on the weak side. When hot passing or sticking out my good side welds start past dead bottom also. Never been called on it and I've taken a LOT of test's this way.
