I would like to limit the amount of stainless rod I keep in stock. Since I plan to weld mostly 316 stainless is it OK to use 316L rod as my do all stainless rod for 300 series stainless?

Using 316L for 304 is ok, other 300 series alloys I'm not sure without looking them up

I stock 308 309 and 316. That gets me by on most stuff.

If your welding 316 then 316L is the correct filler, mixed stainless and 309 is a good choice. If corrosion properties are important then 316L. However 316L is more brittle then say 308L filler on 304.
