Welding Tips and Tricks

I am a very happy camper today. All the equipment has arrived. The Tig Finger just came in by post. The Siegmund welding table came in by truck earlier on today. The Fronius has been on "Lit de parade" on the working bench for a week.

I have been wanting to learn welding for 40 years. Tomorrow it is finally welding time.

And that's some nice gear right there. I'm thinking of a similar table.

One thing you'll learn quickly though is always have spare gas. Especially this time of year, don't want yo run out in the middle of a public holiday.

Another Norwegian friend have the same fronius, I believe. Very nice machine once you learn how to set it.
Hope you are close to the gas supplier. You will soon discover that bottle runs out fast.

I was also concerned about the 5L being to small, but it is only the reserve bottle. The 11L behind it is the main bottle. Hopefully this will get me through Christmas.

The problem here in Norway regarding bottles is that 11L is the largest you can buy. If you wan't bigger bottles you have to rent them. A 20L will set you back $300 a year just to rent it. Then you ad another $150 per filling.

A 50L is what I would really like to have, but being a happy hobbyist I have to put the finger in the ground and realize the cost/benefit would be to high.

See you have Airliquide on the bench. Found Hydro (Yara/Praxair) to be a better option. If you get a contract for 5 years you might find it easier to negotiate with them. I think I pay roughly 1300 sek / year in rent.

Sad to hear that gas options are so restrictive where you are.

Makes me feel almost greedy with my current...10,800 litre bottle. And I'm only a hobby welder!

If I used 11 litre bottles I'd need them on some sort of Gatling-style rotary array with quick change couplings and an ejector for the empties.

My first bottle ('D'-size, 1,700 litre) lasted me about three weeks. Tig eats up gas if you are doing it regularly.

Very impressed by your Fronius...beautiful machine!

Thanks for the reply. Pretty happy with the Fronius. Time will show how long the 11L will last. If it empties to often and to quick I will have to reevaluate...

On my bucket list is a few months touring Australia and NZ off the beaten track by motorcycle

And to answer your question, I grew up riding/racing dirt bikes before switching to road racing. Ironically, I sold my KTM380EXC dirt racer to raise funds to buy my Tig welder.

I use 200 bar 10L bottles and can get 20L overhere in The Netherlands as a private individual, but I can usually spend quite a while welding using it even with back-purging stainless steel exhausts so I don't usually bother with the bigger (more cumbersome) bottle.

If you need more Argon and don't want or can not 'upsize' too much you could also check to see if they offer argon in the newer 300 bar bottles in Norway. That gets you quite a decent extra amount of cubic metres of gas in the same size bottle (may need a new regulator if yours is not rated for 300 bar though..)

craig, there is a formula for the number of bikes (X) you need:

X=n+1

n=the number you have today
