How would you clean this? Even so an argon purge would be required.

You could solder it, that's probably how the can is made if it's very old. If you tig on it you'll get it too hot and the can's joints may get hot enough to flow the solder. Soup cans used to work well as a patch for this kind of repair because they were made out of tin. I'm not sure what cans are made of these days, you'd probably have to experiment to find a patch material.

I once new an old guy who went to weld on an old water tank. Turns out 20 Year’s before it was a fuel tank. Was the last mistake he made! He’d done work on lots of old fuel tanks. That one was no big deal. It was a closed casket.

Hey guys thatnks for the replies. The gas cab is one of the brand new eagle brand red metal cans. It just has a little slice in it. I was hoping to just be able to fill in with rod. It’s. It that big where a patch is needed. I will post a pic of it this week when I grab it from work. I would clean it by flushing it with hot soapy water thouroughly an then I’ve seen guys stick a rag in it an light it an if it does t go boom your good to weld.

Seal-All is a sealer that might work well.
