Pulse has it's place especially with thin materials and stainless. When I'm doing actually tig for legitimate practice and projects, I use the pedal and don't pump it. I can't keep it consistent enough and if you watch one of Jodys videos on it, "romping" the pedal actually increases your heat input over normal pulse.

We don't, and never have had foot pedals at work. And don't use pulse as that would require a new procedure. Until you get your ducks in a row, just play it straight and don't stress too much about finding a setting of a function to save the day. You have to crawl before you can run.

No problem mate. I only meant that as a learner, don't let things cloudy what is already a difficult process to master. Dab move dab move dab move works perfectly for me, most likely because I don't have access to the functions that you are talking about. One day, I'll buy myself a good tig, and I dare say I'll be pulsing everything in touch

Great stuff, Alan. A true enthusiast will engulf everything involved with their obsession and learn from it all. I also forgot to mention that I don't tig on anything under 3mm thick and the majority is over 6mm. I currently use my machine on 185 amps for the thicker stuff.

Mick, Mike it's all good. The only tip I can give you not to be impatient. Do a few dabs and let it cool off. I am my own worst enemy when it comes to stuff like this as I don't wait long enough. Cooling off and using a wire brush on the repair as you go to get rid of the oxide scale. Don't be afraid to start half way across the joint, when starting a fresh one, the welding into the end of your bead. It'll give you a lump to land on and suck out a little heat. On thin work, a precisely sharpened and polished electrode will make a difference, and make it easier for you get the joint welded with out having to hang around. Also you may need to clean up the inside of the tubes as well, because the weld will draw crud from the underside

Maybe a little thicker filler rod? Can help chill the puddle and give you a moment to get on with it

Run bead after bead on a flat plate of 1/8" or thicker. Don't worry about joints yet, just practice getting a nice level and constant widths on your beads.

Just keep going, you got to put in a lot of helmet time. Looking good though.

I think you need to strait weld with no pulse (with your pedal or otherwise). Just to many things on your plate to begin with. Heck, after looking at my weld and it's all flat and almost melted through, I forget I have a pedal to control my amps. There's so much to think about in a very short time! It has to become second nature.
