Silverware Welding

I found this post in the forums from a few years ago regarding welding of silverware. I am working on projects do that same thing and I'm wondering if fusing is not the proper way to do it. It seems to me that adding filler rod may only help make the joints look "globby". This guy uses a wire feeder to tack the pieces together and that works okay on the internal welds. A couple tacks on the outside isn't too bad either.
The silverware is run of the mill stuff that's some sort of mild steel in the middle and coated in stainless or some sort of chrome; at least that's what I think since it will stick to a magnet. If that's the case, I doubt the filler metal matters much except in the case of appearance. Any thoughts? Thanks.
