Best way to pad beads on mild steel?

I need to just run some beads to refresh on my technique because welding joints would waste a lot of material, but as you know when you get mild steel hot enough it'll start scaling over, not an issue with stick welding, but very much one with tig, has anyone found a certain plate thickness or technique that works well for just stacking beads?

I just use several pieces and rotate between them so the heat doesn't build as quickly. I started doing that when I started learning aluminum (still learning) because the pieces would heat up so quickly and that would add another variable I had to account for. Stick and MIG I keep a bucket of water and cool the part every could of beads.

Bucket of cold water and a clean, new wire wheel. Quick acetone wipe.
