Welding Tips and Tricks

was thinking about putting an order in for a big diameter cup gas lens. main use is for stainless.
what do you guys recommend?

at the moment the biggest i have is an 8 which is fine for the thinner stuff (eg 1/16), but i know i have some repairs coming up that will be a lot thicker.
of course i'm a CK fan, but other brands ok as long as they can fit on ck gas lens. for eg the furick cups require their own gas lens.

Fupa 10 or 12 in ceramic. Jody sells them both and they thread straight on. Ceramic because you can walk 'em, the pyrex versions aren't as conducive to it. The Fupa 12 in pyrex with the ring can walk, but it's pricey and you need to use an o-ring to seal it.

I highly recommend Furick. The ceramic versions (and the new version of the glass BBW) will thread onto any CK 2 or 4 series gas lens. No modifications or anything special needed. The glass versions of the 8, 10 and 12 do need a modified gas lens (o-ring groove cut into it) if using the 4 series, but typically can be used on the 2 series gas lenses with no modification.

Big caps are used 99% for rage welding and most of time they was made for art welding - ''beauty welding'' , normally not using on torch size 26 ( standard ), normally for micro torch and for sure combination with pedal and fingers glove. You can use your way and try but i will like to ask DO YOU REALLY NEED ...? I have all cups - shape and size . Im just wondering what some of specialist saying on youtube how and for what you have to use . Be honest if you know how to weld and you want to make some next step and you planning to be better as other then go for it.Other way just stay with ceramic and you need size 4 -10 that all most of time 6-7 . Im doing sometimes 1 pack 5KG - 4.0mm a day guess what ... cup 7 -10 ... and on X-ray 96 - 98.8% that most then perfect and without gas lens.

About 1/16 that is 1.57mm most of time you should use cup by need no by thicknes of material . Is to much bad mistic about BIG cups ... 101% i can do any job without using glas even i need. This is just my opinion and guys you dont have to agry with anything i writed down ..

i mentioned material thickness as an indicator of amps.
just looking at reducing heat tint a bit on the higher amp welds. make cleanup a bit easier.

Could always go with the monster #24 from arc zone.

If that don't do it set another one up on a trailing arm [emoji14]

thanks for the offer, but postage is a killer to here. i typically do a big enough order that its worth it. not to mention the time it takes to get here. i have a book on the way at the moment and its almost 2 weeks now. covid is really screwing with shipping.

furick cups i can get here as well as some of the ck stuff.
however the job i was looking at may not end up needing it. looks like its welding 1.6mm to 5mm. i'll know exactly next week.

Tweake - material thickness has little to do with gas coverage (as you know). If its stainless, the #10 or #12 especially, are game changers for weld quality. I prefer the ceramics because the screw on and are more durable.

I have a 26 style torch which I attached a 12 ceramic cup to, I love it.

Learning to "walk the cup" is the challenge.

I didn't see you mention if your torch was watercooled or air cooled, but regardless I would suggest a Fupa 12 too along with a stubby gas lens kit if you run an air cooled torch. I got a Jazzy 10 and it's noticeably better compared to a equally sized 10 cup, It impressed me enough I'm probably going to post a review about it.

The ceramic cups will fit on any gas lens for a 9/20 torch and any stubby kit for a 17/26, which I would highly highly recommend if you don't already have one.

that should give me plenty of gear for the repairs in the coming weeks.
