Welding Tips and Tricks

I finally stepped into the Instagram world and checked out WeldPorn, wow. I feel I'm a pretty good stainless welder, and my walking the cup skills are pretty good, but damn there are some really talented guys on there, I have never seen such consistency by hand. I'm excited I have some steam pipe coming up, hope to get some worthy pics.

I know what you mean, but remember a photo is (can be) a very small slice of the (visible) pie.

Im a novice at best and dont even own a machine. Does a "Beautiful" weld always equal a good penetrating weld?

I myself browse welds and the beautifully colored ones are amazing, but I wonder how strong they are if people are compromising looks over function.

No pretty doesn't always mean functional by any means...BUT most of those pipe welds are on point, the consistency in the pattern shows the real skill. Many of those may be done on a rotator or easy position but I can appreciate the skill for sure.

Some of the fabrication skills that people share on there are amazing (not just welding either). I admit, I'm a TIG newbie so my untrained eye can't pick out the perfect from the not so perfect but still, the work of a lot of the guys on there really inspires me practice, practice, practice.
