The smooth rollers work fine with the shorter whips. At my old place of employment they used really long whips and the Miller wire feeders had two drive rollers, they used one knurled and one smooth roller to feed the wire through those long whips. I have had the same whip and smooth rollers on my lil Hobart 135 that came on it 15 years ago and hundreds of pounds of FCAW wire has travelled through that without any problems....just take care of the whip and don't bend it in really a tight radius or drop anything on it and it will last a long time. No wire feed issues...just keep the tension set so that the wire doesn't slip, but not so tight that it crushes the wire.
